Dead River Drag (1994 - 1995?)

(Someone please submit a real bio) As I heard it, there were three versions of this band that started after Rollinghead had broken up for the first time. Fronted by Dave Grant (perhaps the only consistent member) the band picked up where Rollinghead left off, and in this writers opinion, created their best record with the CD "Scarlet". Later, the band 'devolved' into a handle for one-off projects for Dave and Mike.

- Dave Grant, Guitar and vocals
- Kevin Oberlin, Bass
- Brent Oberlin, Bass
- Colin Bradford, Guitar
- Willie Axe, Drums
- Mike Roche, Guitar or drums
- Jared Bryant, Drums
- Brett Fields, something
- And some other guys...

- Most importantly, Dave was in Rollinghead. He also did a record with TASM Lab
- Mike and Bret were in Table. Mike was in Thought Industry and the Casies
- Kevin and Brent were in a lot of bands, including Thought Industry and Twitch.

LT EXCLUSIVE! STARS SINGLE
This song is a real treat. It was done in the late, non-live Mike Roche/Dave Grant version. Also then known as the band CHOPPER.
- Stars
THE SCARLET EP - AVAILABLE FROM ITUNES
This album is real treat. Certainly well worth $6 for downloading.

last show was at Harveys on St. Patricks Day. DRD and Cabrini Green too I think.
Great band, great show!

Oh, I really want to hear that. Someone please find it.
It often cost $500 to the Harry Fox agency to put a cover on a first press CD :(

There is a great cover of Pretty in Pink out there somewhere. I got to play keyboards. I'm not sure why it didnt end up on Scarlet

i remember stars from the drd shows. great memories. great song. rollinghead will always be a favorite of mine but i thought drd evolved into a sound that would have made a dent, nationally. i was already preparing my "i remember 'em when..." stories. one of a kind voice.

OK, I've fixed the link to 'STARS' and appropriately attributed it to the non-band CHOPPER.
Do download it, as its a fucking heart attack and a half.

'scarlet' is the best rollinghead album by far, and 'parasites' might be the best Dave Grant I've heard. This EP feels animated in the sense that you can feel a dialog or story arch, like a film, throughout. Plus, Dave does kalamazoo better than anyone. Everything you wanted to know about driving cars and starting fires. Dirty snow. Boarding up your windows and breathing through our pillows.
The best part, of course, is when the preacher tells the drunk that he already talked to Jesus. As if, who wouldn't assume that he wouldn't, dipshit?
This album also makes a fine case for Dave as a lyricist to go along with his excellent songwriting and superb voice. Between those three characteristics and his savage good looks, it must have taken everything in his power to avoid becoming a world-wide celebrity.

this has to be one of the most incredible cds recorded during the heyday of kzoo rock .. i downloaded the entire thing at itunes and can't stop listening .. above all for dave grants writing, vocal style and lyrics; HOWEVER, sometimes he's hard to understand - could someone maybe post the lyrics here if they've got em??

Although the song Stars was played out live by DRD it was originally recorded as a project that we were calling Chopper at the time of the recording. Mike played guitar, Dave did vocals, Jar played drums and I played bass. We intended to record another song that we thought was the most solid at the time, but it didn't go well, so we switched to plan B and Stars was the result. It was recorded start to finish and mixed in one night. The result of much hard work and about 2 cases of beer. Great song, great memories.
