..and yeah, "Fantastic Zero" is godly...that whole 1st Act of the disc...*somehow* that album came together as a miraculous, definitive chapter in the sonic oeuvre, despite being on Grass Records : ) ....didn't Bryers say (in an interview way back) that the lyrics were somewhat inspired by horror movie ghoulies? (like The Exorcist, etc)

both "Nero Apologizes" and "Locomotive God" are mind-boggling, forward-thinking, magnificent works of grand mythic importance...I think I was around 17 when I bought 'Beaten Senseless...' and few albums have haunted me like that disc. Have I mentioned too many times that I *still* have my heather-grey Twitch shirt (ordered from Grass Records mail order)?

I'm glad people liked the new info(or old info for some).
Nothing will ever compare to the first two T.I. releases...imo.
I really like stuff after that too, but that was a very important time for me to be listening to them.
I luckily saw them here in Minnesota on the "Mods" tour and it was AWESOME!
I am envious of fans that saw them multiple times.

So- in the lyrics to Black Umbrella- were those all typos as well? It's quite funny how they were thanked by Black Spring as "Though Industry". I'm not taking a shot at anyone- all this time I thought it was deliberate, like Desacrator. Was that done so the logo would be more symmetrical?

Not to dispute Dave nor Chris in this bully-fine interview (thanks for posting!),
On post Mods albums being less of a group effort: if you scan the songwriting credits on Shortwave, besides Brent's monopoly on lyrics, that just about everybody chipped in on composition.
And I believe "THE Thought Industry" didn't appear until Shortwave either.

Dave Richardson Hello everybody, I got in contact with Christopher Lee over the last week and asked him some questions that I was always wondering about. He was ok with me posting, so I thought you would all like to read it.

2. The first two albums seemed to be a group effort, but after Mods, it seemed to change. Was this because Brent switched to guitar or was there less input from others?

well, S.F.I. was a trio effort ultimately. Brent, Dustin and I. We had a few years of creating, living and fighting between us and that gave great chemistry to our song building process. most of those songs had been in our repertoire since the late desecrator days. brent and i both wrote lots of songs parts, brent was a little better at making songs out of them in those days, so he would take my ideas and incorporate them into his, and some of my complete ideas became songs. dustin was always the one pushing the envelope to get a signature sound out of them. dustin didn't really write any music per-say, but his influence and energy would prove to be sorely missed after we let him go. he was brents counter balance in many ways. i digress... so S.F.I. was written over years and recorded in a week... lame! Metal Blade sucked!! anyway, i played all of the guitar parts on that album except for pauls leads and i think some acoustic stuff. so was it a group effort, not completely, it was the 3 of us pushing our agendas and slighting paul a bit. he was very new at that time. Mods... that was a group effort album. paul wrote some and played his own parts, i had written more complete song ideas, brent was coming into his own vocally and structurally, and dustins artistic input was top notch. DD's sonic input really pushed our approach into that TI sound. Ken Marshall really helped capture that too. touring really shoved a wedge between dustin and the rest of us. he really wanted to be "the guy" and the rest of us were peaking in our own musical ways at that time so, the ego flare-ups were unbearable. So we decided it was best that dustin move on to pursue his own agendas. brent had some "issues" at that time that really hindered the bands cohesion and started to get much worse upon dustins separation. so long dirty story short, brent quit playing bass. this was the beginning of the end for me. i had about 20 songs for the next record, i think paul and brent did too. in the end the "issues" were too much for the band, and i opted out just after a couple tours for O.S.I.J.A.M.A.. that album was mostly brent and i writing and struggling, paul was cut short once again, and the other guys were just players and didn't have the original chemistry that made TI cool, in my opinion. after that, he (brent) should have changed the name. which he sorta did, to THE thought industry...
3. Did you like Dustin's playing or was it hard to write or play with such a busy player (I ask this as a drummer). Did you think the musical direction was better when Dustin was in the band?

i think i answered this in the previous question, but YES! without doubt, dustins playing was essential in TI's style. We should have gotten some sort of group therapy and worked out our ego issues, but in the end it all happened for the best. i am a busy player myself. i am now a drummer as well as a guitarist etc... and i play very much in that style.
4. Who's idea was it to pan guitars hard left/right on MODS? And was it because you and Paul were doing such different things...esp on Boil?

hmmm... well i guess that idea was lennon and mccartneys!? seriously though.... but metal at that time was that way; slayer, metallica, anthrax, etc... it was the norm. still is really.
5. Why did you leave Thought Industry and do you ever miss playing with past members...who would you play with again?

Jeez... I can't answer that question with complete honesty because it would be damaging to some people. let's just say that the aforementioned "issues" were typical, always end the same way, and i was having no part of it anymore. plus, i had an offer to play with FILTER. if you remember in all the bio bullshit TI released after i quit, they said i left due to problems living in chicago... well, the problem was i would drive 2.5 hrs to kalamazoo, every week, couple times a week, to rehearse as scheduled and people were too bust getting drunk/high/laid to honor the agreed practice schedule. ya see, the deal was i would get us a chicago base and they would come there to live and grow. anyway, i met an old friend (geno from chemlab) and he was in FILTER at that point, so we worked together on some material, and that lead to me getting the offer to do Title Of Record. So when the final straw fell, i just walked away from TI very easily... sad really... but for the best. i got a platinum award out of it! and a shit ton of work after that. who would i play with now? well that would depend on who's being real and who's not. Dustin for sure! Jared and Paul i would like to. it's funny you ask... i had an investor about 5 years ago that's a very famous/powerful/rich dude that just loves TI to no end, and he was willing to pay for us to reunite, record, and tour, all on his dime. but when i tried to make contact with some of the TI peeps, i got negativity and emptiness. so i dropped it. i ultimately didn't really feel it was a good idea anyway.
6. If you were asked (probably for a chunk of money) to write and record a new Thought Industry album (no touring, just a new album) with Brent, Dustin, Paul and you...would you do it?

see previous answer. but i guess the answer might be yes. i am very busy producing bands/artists, writing and recording songs, and i have no desire to interrupt that. dustin and i had mentioned it through email once, but neither of us ran with that ball. honestly, i have this project TEN TON ROLLER-SKATE that is a big $ maker. It's gonna take a lot to pull me off of that tit at the moment. but if the price was right, and the atmosphere was clear, i'd probably do it. shit, i've got about 200 complete songs recorded that would make great new TI stuff. basically anything that doesn't make the bullhead cut.

as always, peter gabriel, meshuggah, deftones, fredrik thordendals special defects, ani difranco, devin townsend/strapping young lad, steve vai, skinny puppy/ohgr, this list could go on... I am more influenced by drummers these days; martin agren, owe lingvall, tomas haake, carter beauford, ray luzier, terry bozzio, john macalusso.
