Club Soda Calendars

This page loads slowly, so just wait a minute.

The 'Temple presents to you Club Soda calendars, those hand-drawn monthly tellings that we all used to wait for to see if your band was booked, almost like waiting for the casting sheet for the school play (you weren't in the drama club?). Thanks to COLIN HOOPINGARNER for sharing his collection with us, and for JOBY scanning them for us. If anybody else has more, please send them on.

Click for bigger versions.

The COLIN HOOPINGARNER collection

Here's a dozen or so calendars. From what looks like 1991-1994. Reading them, even out of sequence, you can remember how the scene evolved over that time, particularly looking at match-ups, such as Selling Heaven playing with Twitch. This may be one of the most greivous violations of unlicensed Calvin and Hobbes clip art ever done (if you remember, Waterson never merchandised his beloved characters).

I'm guessing this one is from April 1991 or April 1992. Captain Dave! Overman got to open for Victim's Family, one of favorite bands at the time (I can barely sit through their records now). Note that THE SINATRAs had changed their name to KERPLUNK for the moment. WATER FOR THE POOL is popular.

December 1991, one of the few that has a year mentioned (I now wish all flyers had a year, how shortsighted to not think these would be in a museum some day). Note that FOUR PEACE and ROLLINGHEAD appear twice. WRECK was part of that nasty NYC group that used to steal equipment of opening bands to fund their tours. NEW DUNCAN IMPERIALS. NEW YORK ROOM + VATICAN always seemed to be a package deal.

February 1993 (must be). FOUR PEACE changed their name to SUICIETY. COTTAGE CHEESE is playing out. Does anyone remember CONFUSE A CAT? I don't.

February 1992 (could be 1991). H204thePool is on twice, and Johnnie with Eye are both here, suggesting that VERVE PIPE hasn't formed yet. BRYERS hasn't joined TWITCH yet, as SELLING HEAVEN headlines with OVERMAN in the beer slot, and twitch opening. Victims Family opens for a pretty high falutin ALICE DONUT show. RESIN MATTRESS is playing out.

I THINK this is January 1994, because of the likes of DOXIE, GHG. Would TABLE being playing then? You can't see it in the scan, but it looks like IN OURSELVES opens for TI (the name IN OURSELVES always made me think of someone with their own thumb up their ass, but I saw them once and they were very good, but I digress). The Calvin and Hobbes never stops.

June 91 or 92? I'm going to say 1992. Was X's FOR EYES really TOUNGE or EYETEETH? I can't remember. I haven't decided which category JABERWOCK goes under, were they WEEKENDERS or displaced Boots n' shorts? June must of been a slow month with school out of session, this month looks like a snore. Everyone must have been out tripping and enjoying the weather.

March 1993, plainly marked (thanks! It's like finding the rosssetta stone). AIDS BABIES. Nice. That would've actually been in bad taste in that year. VERVE PIPE is playing soda. The POSTER CHILDREN are hot and manage to avoid the success every other similar popular band is having.

October 1991. Here's a month that would have me practically living at Soda. ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT. OVERMAN and KING TAMMY (could of been the 'fight' show). The FAQ + SINATRAs show would have been a fine night. BLACK SPRING + TWITCH.

This one doesn't even have a month, but I would guess this is late 1993 or early 1994. Anyone have something to say about this? "Nocturnal night" is dumbly redundant, or maybe the irony went over my head.

Another monthless one, I'm sure somebody could look at the blend of bands, the fact that Soda is closed on Sunday, and sleuth when this was. I'm guessing Mid-to-late 1993 or 1994 (I left town in mid-1993 and can note just enough forigness to this). The presence of LOVE OFFERING and DOXIE says FA-Q is way done by this point. The CLOCKMAKER booking is confusing, unless this was the JEFF HUTCHENCE version? TABLE is playing here, so JARED must be out of the clock making business.

September 1991, maybe 1992. Twitch is booked twice. The saturday with Selling Heavena and the Sinatras seems wierd, as if the Club knew it was only going to get sceney people and no college students (what is the state of WMU on the first weekend of September??) Didn't Straw Village have a girl singing for them? You'd almost think that would've been enough (for what, you ask?). Monday with Melvins, FAQ and Twitch could not have been missed

I think this is September 1992. Verve Pipe are still being announced as former Water for the Pool, and FA-Q has taken their end or ride name change to INTERSTATE BRICKFACE. LAUGHING HYENAS was a tough show. BRAIN TREE and KONICHI WAH comes to the party. The calendar's visual look is overhauled, with great attention to the design of "too be announced" boxes, and near total dissregaurd for actual booked bands.

PLEASE specify WHICH robin was crowd surfing without panties. I am told that I now have a growing fan base! This was brought to my attention by a co worker/aka local rocker. To those of you who care, I really miss the majority of the bands that played at soda and the band members. This was a part of my life that I will always cherish, despite the way it ended. glad to hear you guys are still rockin' sorry though, you wont see this robin crowd surfing at your show, ha ha. hope none of you hate me for what happened to jeff, i tried to stop it, but he wouldnt listen. later people

Confuse a Cat were approachable. At one show, I glommed on to one of the band members, all excited by the Python reference... he didn't seem to mind at all. Detroit bands seemed (seem) to come in two variations, great mates or total assholes.Jabberwock (I think the calendar listing is a misspelling, I'm too lazy to dig up my proof right now) deserve to be listed under "Leppotone itself"... I think they'd be surprised to be found listed as/with "Weekenders"!Sinatras played at least a couple of shows with Jabberwock. I found out, quite belatedly, that they'd pressed a small-hole 7" single on the Leppotone imprint, which carries the same label # as the debut Sinatras 7". I was totally unaware of the abandoned release (and I'm unclear as to why it went unreleased) until I worked with T Gregor at Flipside in '98... he showed up one night with copies of the damn thing! We decided to sell about half a dozen double-packs of both LT-002 singles as a 2-fer super-cheap, wish you were there! At any rate, Tony went on to Monster Zero with Matt S., if I'm not mistaken. I'm not mistaken that the two of them were 2/3 of the Rural Electrification Act, a superb trio on whose CD I would have played keys if I hadn't been in new-dad mode, not willing to take on extra recording duties... I still remember turning Matt down on the phone... having heard the resulting CD, I regret the decision. RIP REA.

Confuse a Cat was out of Detroit. Think they were a 3 piece(maybe 4) with at least one female. Can't be positive on that one. They were real approachable people though and I believe I still have their 7" in storage someplace. --- end of previous message ---

I think there is a movie idea somewhere in hanging Jared's burger wrapper on your wall. I would see it like "wilson" in Cast Away.

I thought I was the only dork that kept those calendars so I threw mine out years ago. I used to have one signed by T.I. on my bedroom wall in high school. I saw them at the Wendy's across from soda before a show. I also stole Jared's burger wrapper which I hung from the wall too. Now that was going too far. I should have had them sign the Wendy's wrapper. Thought Industry is my Beatles. Bryers is my Rolling Stones. Dave Grant is my Elvis. Jeff, you are my Andrew Lloyd Weber/Picasso. fu#k seattle --- end of previous message ---

FYI, Excepting the one with the big black TBA s, these calanders were drawn up by Tom Kennedy, the one time Soda barmaster extraordinare. I believe the TBA one was done by another soda bartender, John DeRyke. Thanks to Joby and Jeff for getting these up and calming my fears that they were used for lighting the charcoal at some drunken BBQ. Cheers!
