American progressive metal band Thought Industry was formed in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1989 by vocalist/bassist Brent Oberlin, drummer Dustin Donaldson (who formed I Am Spoonbender in 1997), guitarist Christopher Simmonds (aka Christopher Lee), and guitarist Steve Spaeth. Spaeth left the band due to internal conflicts with Simmonds and started the band Clockmaker. The position was filled by guitarist Paul Enzio in time for 1992's "Songs For Insects", their Metal Blade Records debut. This was followed up by the art-metal masterpiece "Mods Carve The Pig: Assassins, Toads and God's Flesh". 1996's "Outer Space Is Just a Martini Away" subsequently saw a significant change in the band's sound and lineup when Donaldson was replaced by ex-Clockmaker drummer Jared Bryant. Oberlin switched to guitar and Bassist Herb Ledbetter was added. Thought Industry continued to strip down their lineup and sound with 1997's moody "Black Umbrella", which saw the departure of Lee. Bryant, Enzio and Ledbetter also left the band in 1999 which prompted Oberlin to assemble an entirely new lineup for 2001's magnum opus "Short Wave on a Cold Day". Engineer Mike Roche, who recorded "Black Umbrella" and filled in on bass from time to time, was added as a full time guitarist along with drummer Cameron Taylor, bassist Mark Baldwin and guitarist/keyboardist Jeff Borkowski.

This is the cassette demo that sold many (probably thousands?) copies and eventually was handed off from Jason Newstead to label guys, and arguably, started the real golden age in kzoo.

Went to K college in the glory days of Kalamazoo, love early TI and I Am Spoonbender, so i thought i'd post this here. Last summer i was in LA and San Francisco for work, and my boss took me to this restaurant in Hollywood where "the artists hang out". We were sitting there when Kirk from Metallica walked in with Dustin Donaldson (who i didn't recognize at first) and sat down a couple of tables over. I couldn't hear them much. They finished eating and Dustin went outside to call somebody. Hammett went to the bathroom so i went out to say hello and maybe talk kalamzoo. When i got there, Mike Patton walked up to Donaldson! Kirk joins the conversation. They all know each other well it seemed. Then i see a guy and a girl come out of a place from across the street, notice the group and poke each other. They sorta nervously come over, wanting to say something. Finally, they said "are you Dustin Donaldson!? OMG I Am Spoonbender are gods seen all your shows, etc". NOTHING to Hammett or Patton! man they were excited about meeting Dustin. He was excellent to them, signed autographs and then they all left to go to some gallery opening (i think they said). 5 days later i'm in Frisco, eating breakfast in the Mission District when who do i see but fucking Dustin D again, with Jello Biafra. had to say hi this time (and met Jello!) Donaldson said that recently he was working in Egypt on some 7000 year old cave stuff in the Sahara desert and said that Kalamazoo seemed like another lifetime long ago. awesome. --- end of previous message ---

I stil think the best TI album was Dutch Mafia.

So- in the lyrics to Black Umbrella- were those all typos as well? It's quite funny how they were thanked by Black Spring as "Though Industry". I'm not taking a shot at anyone- all this time I thought it was deliberate, like Desacrator. Was that done so the logo would be more symmetrical?

As i recollect, "THE Thought Industry" was used on the (rather lamentable) cover art of the 'Recruited To Do..' comp.
Some of us in the Detroit area at first expected it was an in-house Metal Blade designer gaff. (I'd once asked Brent about spelling errors in the 'Outer Space..' booklet, and he replied "There weren't any spelling errors *when I turned them in*...")
Speaking of 'Martini..' - let's not overlook that the monolithic show-opener "Fairy" was (at least in riff) credited to Paul.
Any shred of TI insight is awesome, as always - much thanks to D. Richardson for sharing. It's always a pip to see folks mention "issues" w/ regard to Brent...poor fella was just trying to make his way through life : D --- end of previous message --- --- end of previous message ---

Not to dispute Dave nor Chris in this bully-fine interview (thanks for posting!),
On post Mods albums being less of a group effort: if you scan the songwriting credits on Shortwave, besides Brent's monopoly on lyrics, that just about everybody chipped in on composition.
And I believe "THE Thought Industry" didn't appear until Shortwave either.

Dave Richardson Hello everybody, I got in contact with Christopher Lee over the last week and asked him some questions that I was always wondering about. He was ok with me posting, so I thought you would all like to read it.
Chris said:
here ya go, post away;
1. Do you ever listen to Thought Industry, and if so, do you have any favorite songs?
Christopher-
No i don't listen to t.i.. Favs yes; favorite cd = Mods... favorite songs = Songs for Insects, horsepowered, daterape cookbook, boil, smirk the godblender, to build a better bulldozer, D.I.Y. tranquilizers, Watercolour gray.
2. The first two albums seemed to be a group effort, but after Mods, it seemed to change. Was this because Brent switched to guitar or was there less input from others?
Christopher-
well, S.F.I. was a trio effort ultimately. Brent, Dustin and I. We had a few years of creating, living and fighting between us and that gave great chemistry to our song building process. most of those songs had been in our repertoire since the late desecrator days. brent and i both wrote lots of songs parts, brent was a little better at making songs out of them in those days, so he would take my ideas and incorporate them into his, and some of my complete ideas became songs. dustin was always the one pushing the envelope to get a signature sound out of them. dustin didn't really write any music per-say, but his influence and energy would prove to be sorely missed after we let him go. he was brents counter balance in many ways. i digress... so S.F.I. was written over years and recorded in a week... lame! Metal Blade sucked!! anyway, i played all of the guitar parts on that album except for pauls leads and i think some acoustic stuff. so was it a group effort, not completely, it was the 3 of us pushing our agendas and slighting paul a bit. he was very new at that time. Mods... that was a group effort album. paul wrote some and played his own parts, i had written more complete song ideas, brent was coming into his own vocally and structurally, and dustins artistic input was top notch. DD's sonic input really pushed our approach into that TI sound. Ken Marshall really helped capture that too. touring really shoved a wedge between dustin and the rest of us. he really wanted to be "the guy" and the rest of us were peaking in our own musical ways at that time so, the ego flare-ups were unbearable. So we decided it was best that dustin move on to pursue his own agendas. brent had some "issues" at that time that really hindered the bands cohesion and started to get much worse upon dustins separation. so long dirty story short, brent quit playing bass. this was the beginning of the end for me. i had about 20 songs for the next record, i think paul and brent did too. in the end the "issues" were too much for the band, and i opted out just after a couple tours for O.S.I.J.A.M.A.. that album was mostly brent and i writing and struggling, paul was cut short once again, and the other guys were just players and didn't have the original chemistry that made TI cool, in my opinion. after that, he (brent) should have changed the name. which he sorta did, to THE thought industry...
3. Did you like Dustin's playing or was it hard to write or play with such a busy player (I ask this as a drummer). Did you think the musical direction was better when Dustin was in the band?
Christopher-
i think i answered this in the previous question, but YES! without doubt, dustins playing was essential in TI's style. We should have gotten some sort of group therapy and worked out our ego issues, but in the end it all happened for the best. i am a busy player myself. i am now a drummer as well as a guitarist etc... and i play very much in that style.
4. Who's idea was it to pan guitars hard left/right on MODS? And was it because you and Paul were doing such different things...esp on Boil?
Christopher-
hmmm... well i guess that idea was lennon and mccartneys!? seriously though.... but metal at that time was that way; slayer, metallica, anthrax, etc... it was the norm. still is really.
5. Why did you leave Thought Industry and do you ever miss playing with past members...who would you play with again?
Christopher-
Jeez... I can't answer that question with complete honesty because it would be damaging to some people. let's just say that the aforementioned "issues" were typical, always end the same way, and i was having no part of it anymore. plus, i had an offer to play with FILTER. if you remember in all the bio bullshit TI released after i quit, they said i left due to problems living in chicago... well, the problem was i would drive 2.5 hrs to kalamazoo, every week, couple times a week, to rehearse as scheduled and people were too bust getting drunk/high/laid to honor the agreed practice schedule. ya see, the deal was i would get us a chicago base and they would come there to live and grow. anyway, i met an old friend (geno from chemlab) and he was in FILTER at that point, so we worked together on some material, and that lead to me getting the offer to do Title Of Record. So when the final straw fell, i just walked away from TI very easily... sad really... but for the best. i got a platinum award out of it! and a shit ton of work after that. who would i play with now? well that would depend on who's being real and who's not. Dustin for sure! Jared and Paul i would like to. it's funny you ask... i had an investor about 5 years ago that's a very famous/powerful/rich dude that just loves TI to no end, and he was willing to pay for us to reunite, record, and tour, all on his dime. but when i tried to make contact with some of the TI peeps, i got negativity and emptiness. so i dropped it. i ultimately didn't really feel it was a good idea anyway.
6. If you were asked (probably for a chunk of money) to write and record a new Thought Industry album (no touring, just a new album) with Brent, Dustin, Paul and you...would you do it?
Christopher-
see previous answer. but i guess the answer might be yes. i am very busy producing bands/artists, writing and recording songs, and i have no desire to interrupt that. dustin and i had mentioned it through email once, but neither of us ran with that ball. honestly, i have this project TEN TON ROLLER-SKATE that is a big $ maker. It's gonna take a lot to pull me off of that tit at the moment. but if the price was right, and the atmosphere was clear, i'd probably do it. shit, i've got about 200 complete songs recorded that would make great new TI stuff. basically anything that doesn't make the bullhead cut.
7. I see your list of projects on the myspace site:
http://www.facebook.com/l/a7258;www.myspace.com/christopherleesimmonds
Which of these available on cd or download?
Christopher-
all are available, though the bullhead collection is currently in wait due to a potential label deal as a multi cd release.
the static dynamic - the static dynamic
bullhead - scalp
bullhead - taurus
snuttock - straight jacket life
snuttock - carved and sutured
filter - title of record
ten ton roller-skate - (T.B.A.) soon
christopher lee simmonds - the devils only love (T.B.A.)
8. Who do you listen to these days. And what are some of your biggest influences/favorite guitarists?
Christopher-
as always, peter gabriel, meshuggah, deftones, fredrik thordendals special defects, ani difranco, devin townsend/strapping young lad, steve vai, skinny puppy/ohgr, this list could go on... I am more influenced by drummers these days; martin agren, owe lingvall, tomas haake, carter beauford, ray luzier, terry bozzio, john macalusso.
thanks for your questions Dave! I'm always available for any TI friends/fans conversations.
So let me ask you and anyone else that cares to answer a question; of all the former TI members post TI bands, whose your favorite? I personally dig I Am Spoonbender:)
And for the record; 111MZD was just an ordinary Michigan license plate. nothing more... so silly.

ah, but what came first? The dude is totally into vanity plates. In fact, his current license plate says #1soxfan (ever since his move to Boston). And he loves getting his own custom printed photo t-shirts of him giving the double-cobain to the camera. He obviously had an 111MZD plate made after learning/devising/encrypting its true meaning.

I went to a lot of thought industry shows back in the day and the vibe I got from the band was that they were megastars and I was lucky to even be allowed to pay the cover and get in. Very late starts to the show didnt help. Brent Oberlin is better suited being an accountant or whatever he got a degree in. They had a great original sound but you have to achieve something before you are a superstar. --- end of previous message --- --- end of previous message ---

Please send us stuff, you must have it.
Not that it is of any quality, but you can hear my Dustin tribute/homage on the Hudson Debacle's "Hudson Debacle Part I: Drinking with my friends". Moments after I bought my drumset I went out and bought a big, obnoxious, Mods-era ice bell and tried to hit it on the 4 and a half whenever I could.
Related but off topic, Joby said that "drinking with my friends" was a decent song to listen to at 4 am when you are drinking with your friends.

Oh the super hotness of duct tape nipples.
One other thing about the old TI shows was their incorporation of multimedia into their sets prior to anyone else using it(that I can remember.) Of course Tool later stole the idea, and to this day uses the same footage they were using in the mid 90's.
Nothing like seeing a dozen 19 inch tv's piled on top of one another playing some sort of psychotic montage of visuals.

P.S. - The only reason it's just Dustin right now is because he's the only one we can reach. Christopher is unreachable right now... Brent & Paul; where are you? ;)

My favorite TI tour was 'mods' when Brent played the bass slung super low and he made crazy-face while he tappity-tapped. Between his super-low bass and Dustin's super high cymbals, it seemed as if they were trying to make things a little extra challenging to pull off. I believe Chris was still dragging around the old trashcan to beat on too (that sounds like a euphemism for something, but it's not). After the mods tour, the band members stopped dancing, Dustin's replacement, Jared, had a chest too hairy to tape up, and then the live show was just like watching nerds at band practice. After Paul left, nobody in the band seemed to want to spit on other band members. It finally devolved during the 'short wave' tour where Mike Roche would not only eschew dance, but he would sit in a chair on the stage, smoking and drinking a latte while reading the sports page or doing a cross-word puzzle while playing the guitar.
I searched the IAS site and found a band contact e-mail, but nothing specific to Dustin. I'll give that a shot, what do I have to lose? I remember reading about the additional art in the Mods album, I read that it never actually materialized though. I would have loved to see them live during any era, but especially during the first two albums.
