American progressive metal band Thought Industry was formed in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1989 by vocalist/bassist Brent Oberlin, drummer Dustin Donaldson (who formed I Am Spoonbender in 1997), guitarist Christopher Simmonds (aka Christopher Lee), and guitarist Steve Spaeth. Spaeth left the band due to internal conflicts with Simmonds and started the band Clockmaker. The position was filled by guitarist Paul Enzio in time for 1992's "Songs For Insects", their Metal Blade Records debut. This was followed up by the art-metal masterpiece "Mods Carve The Pig: Assassins, Toads and God's Flesh". 1996's "Outer Space Is Just a Martini Away" subsequently saw a significant change in the band's sound and lineup when Donaldson was replaced by ex-Clockmaker drummer Jared Bryant. Oberlin switched to guitar and Bassist Herb Ledbetter was added. Thought Industry continued to strip down their lineup and sound with 1997's moody "Black Umbrella", which saw the departure of Lee. Bryant, Enzio and Ledbetter also left the band in 1999 which prompted Oberlin to assemble an entirely new lineup for 2001's magnum opus "Short Wave on a Cold Day". Engineer Mike Roche, who recorded "Black Umbrella" and filled in on bass from time to time, was added as a full time guitarist along with drummer Cameron Taylor, bassist Mark Baldwin and guitarist/keyboardist Jeff Borkowski.

Chris moved to Chicago (in '96 or so?) and played in an ensemble called Glassy -- after the Outer Space is Just... album and etc. That was quite awhile ago. There were also some midwest rumblings of a Brent Oberlin solo album MANY YEARS ago which did not happen, but that certainly woulda been cool. I am one of those nimrods who sent three bucks to the address in the MODS Carve the Pig booklet, which promised an illustrated booklet to be mailed...when I spoke to Dustin in '95 (outside his Pansy Division gig) he suggested the booklet wasn't going to happen...

I met Dustin Donaldson in Berlin last year and got to ask him all sorts of stuff about his work, even all the way back to Thought Industry days when he only played drums. What a pioneer, and fearless. It's great that he's made it. cheers from Austria!

What's happening with these guys? Is Brent still playing for Cosm'? What was Chris's band after T.I, did they release anything? I remember he came on W.F.I and said their sound was like the Mods Carve album.. You can't imagine how much all these back recordings and live footage on YouTubE means to a lowly Australian T.I fan. I have G.H.G, Table, every T.I album, including the re-released Gelatin record, and finally - isn't the mystery of the 111mzd written up in the Desecrator history? Cheers to the Kalamazoo/Mich sound scene.....

100% certain Brent's license plate number. The car was larger than Donald Trumps yacht. When I win the lottery I will personally pay for a reunion concert.

it is true that brent's licence plate had the infamous 111 mzd stamped into it, but it is NOT the actual source of the 111 mzd concept. it is only known by dustin donaldson, christopher lee and brent oberlin, and they are known to have made a pact of eternal secrecy regarding the meaning and purpose of the cipher.

Ok I myself did not ask Brent this question (so take it as you will)..but one of my friends asked Brent what 111MZD meant. His reply was that it was his licence plate number. True or not? Guess you will have the track down Brent and ask him yourself. --- end of previous message --- --- end of previous message ---

Not sure if Brent or Mike want it being bandied about so I'll ask before I go much further but I did have a tape with Ferris Wheel/Plastic Baby/other stuff post Shortwave with drums that are one mic in a room special goodness. I took Ferris Wheel to Posi and it turned into Economy of Motion. I still like Brent's lyrics better (obviously) but I'm glad it lives on.
