Nash and I tried to re-mix the original recording (sans original tape, working with just the CD) to remove/extend the fade-out so the listener could hear more of your awesome guitar solo.

By 7" are you referring to records that require a turntable to play? (otherwise we're hard pressed to muster six inches here at the 'lab)

Cherry did you just call Bryers a Dark Prince? Creepy dude, creepy . . .
Posted by: Jeff on 06-24-08 about all
Speaking of old, won't it seem creepy seeing the 40-year-old Shaggers leering at the 17-year-old tail at WMU orientation?
*me=totally jealous*
It's taken Bryers a long time to pussify some perfectly good metal. Don't forget how he ruined Twitch after "feel the palm". He once even stated that he should have been awarded the "sammy hagar ruin for favorite metal band" award for screwing up Twitch.
He would eventually go such lows as having Steve Martin and Kevin "eyelock" Oberlin playing "I love you more than you'll ever know" in Sleet.

Just heard "Hazel & Black Rabbit." And let me tell you, Bryers rhymes with pussy. Whatever happened to the dark prince of K'zoo? Jesus, are we all getting old or what?

Or maybe they were just out of line (dequeued)?

What's "DQ'ed"? Does it mean "dairy queened"?, as in Chonk got dairy queened? At first I thought it sounded yummy, but now I think it might be something sexual...

lol disqualified. Since consulting with my parentals, whose brains have almost as many holes in them as mine does, it seems I may be mistaken on that point; I'm hearing now that they came in second or third. My mom's convinced we won and the Sounds of Silence freshmen came in second, FA-Q (she calls 'em "fah kyew") third. Maybe it was the other band that didn't place, who knows? Chonk might, but Halsey won't - he wasn't in the band yet then.
I'll get a link up to Actors stuff in a day or so - don't worry about hosting it, I need an excuse to start delving into my musical past on my own site anyway, this is as good as any. I'd get it up (there's that secks agin) faster, but I've got a client with an active contract who has been gettin slacked on these last couple of days.
There was a 4th band on the bill as well I think - maybe even a fifth - but I couldn't tell you their names.
Hey, it's Tuesday. In some alternate universe, the Verve Pipe is playing Harvey's tonight...

I wanna hear Actors demos way more than "The Freshman" any day - simply not enough Turtles influence on the LT crowd back in the day. Michael Maltese freaked Flo and Eddie out by bringing a White Whale You Baby reel-to-reel to a Turtles show in Portage a few years back. Ronnie Sinatra asked 'em if they wanted to come out for drinks with us, and, well, "We Ain't Gonna Party No More" wasn't sung in response but it should've been.
But I digress - Actors demos - please post! Athens forever!
... a ridiculously poppy thing called "Some Kind Of Something" that got some airplay and sounded way too much like "Happy Together" by the Turtles but got some airplay.

Karen moved to chicago. Mistype.
Posted by: Alias? on 05-05-08 about all
Noooo. Totally different person. Guess it's bio time...
Dan *did* play drums for 4P. I played drums all over the place, but most of the bands I was in that anyone would know about were pre-grunge metal/hair bands - a MEHTULL cover band based in Galesburg called "Push" and then Axis with Jason Gentry and Mike McIntosh (Jason, as I've mentioned previously, passed away a few years ago; Mike is now the lead singer for popular coverbar band Drop35. Axis opened the very first multi-local-band bill, before there was a Lollapalooza let alone a kalapalooza, at the State Theatre, august 1 1987).
After that I was involved in the little godband thing that eventually became "Remnant," which was a godmetal band featuring Doug Garnett, Shawn Warne, and Dave Foxx of Obtrusive Mode/Louden (Gary Green was second guitar when I was involved).
Throughout the 80's, I was also just 'guy on the scene,' attending (and playing) a lot of basement parties (including Stosh Warner's birthday party featuring a little band from BC called Desacrator) and generally doing a lot of MEHTULL covers and a few originals, including the infamous "Looks that Kill" session with Steve Spaeth back when he was first learning to play, and later the St. A's Battle of the Bands that featured FAQ with a VERY poofy-haired Chunk getting DQd for f-bombing and I *still* can't remember 100% if we beat or came in second to Johnny with an Eye's cover of "Sounds of Silence." I went to alternative ed. in portage with JWAE vox Jim(?), who I think ended up continuing on with the VA's as they became VP. He asked me once if I wanted to join JWAE, and I turned it down...and have been kicking myself for it ever since I heard "Freshmen" on the radio the first time.
People called me Animal back then.
When I was in the godband with Garnett my gf got tight with a girl named Karen, who was Doug's betrothed at the time; she later ended up dating Dustin for quite a while. I had a daughter in 1989, which caused my removal from godband as having chilluns outside of marriage was a distinctly un-christian thing to do. Later, me mommy and baby lived on Rose street at the time, right around the corner from Dustin's apartment at dutton and burdick, the one with the smograsbroad wall - this is where Spaeth, G. Green and I recorded the original version of the weird bass-heavy offtime break/trippy thing that later made its way onto a Clockmaker tape sans the drum machine and vocal parts I recorded - and after mommy and I broke up (see my ref to Vegas Jenkins, toward whom I bear no animosity at all, but it's all relevant because that happened due to Kelly (mom) being friends with Karen who was dating Dustin who was buds with Vegas). I got wrapped up in vacillating between being daddy and being rock star, with daddy ultimately winning. Went without a kit for a couple of years - during the 4p era on westnedge and shurgard - and basically hung around, then disappeared into family life with my new GF, my kid, and her kid for a while around the same time 4P replaced Coville and became Suiciety.
I'd gone to school with Matt B (and way before that was in string orchestra with Karla W in elementary and middle school) and knew him and Greg from Worhead (actually jammed with them a couple of times on Bat's set over at Greg's house), knew Dan & Tracy from Star World days, knew pretty much everyone else in town from the same time period. Spent a lot of time with 4p as "manager" (trans: wanted to be playing but had no drums, but made a bunch of flyers at the copy shop at western and spend a lot of time driving around to and occasionally booking gigs including reptile house and the dance factory in chicago) Also booked some shows for 4P and a DC-Core band from Jackson called Sky Juice.
AFTER Suiciety broke up, I had made my way back onto the 'scene' a bit, spent some time living with Freedom Rock and Beaknose Greg at the fruit warehouse (Me and beaknose jammed with Halsey there once, I want to say? And me and Bogema and Reimer played the world's most sucktastic attempt at covering 'Stranglehold' there one drunk night as well, but mostly I did way too many drugs and drove a cab). Eventually, after 4p/Suiciety called it quits and Dave moved away, me, Matt, and Coville had a three-piece thing called Gypsy Blue that was actually quite a cool band but Matt's perfectionism kept us from ever playing out beyond having some parties at the rehearsal space (also my apartment at the time) above Stoops' furniture downtown, across MI avenue from the Whoarehouse. That eventually fell apart because of Coville's frustration with Matt for us never playing out, and Matt's frustration with me because I wasn't working at the time and he was working for Mick Stoops who was leaning on *him* about me paying rent, so blah. Around this same time, my folks moved to North Carolina and took my daughter with them since I was no longer really even able to support myself, let alone my kid, and when GB fell apart I followed them down here in August of '94.
Here in NC, I dropped my last name (DeJong) and started going by John Henry. I was in a Grateful Dead hippie band called Wax Planet for a while, and a three-piece that I actually forget the name of which was very Tool-ish, a brief stint with local heroes Jam Pain Society, and a four-peace bluesy/kinksy outfit called The Actors. The last is the only one I have music from, a rough four-track demo that had a couple of nice little rockers on it, one semi-punkish thing that I didn't like, and a ridiculously poppy thing called "Some Kind Of Something" that got some airplay and sounded way too much like "Happy Together" by the Turtles but got some airplay. That ended in 2002 when the bass player became convinced that aliens from mars were "fucking with his head" and I was controlling them (no kidding - he went in to a local psych hospital a few weeks after I quit for a voluntary eval and they refused to let him leave), and I ended up selling my kit to try and avoid moving back home with the rentals. It didn't work, and I've been kitless, bandless, and basically cashless ever since, as I was busy trying to be a rock star when I should have been busy trying to get an education.
These days I run an independent web design/IT consultancy making not nearly as much as I'd like. Still a musician at heart and fully intend to get back into instruments when I can afford it, but am long long past the whole 'living in a van' thing. Oh, and I spent a couple of years as a ring announcer/manager in local indy pro-wrestling outfits including OMEGA which (if you follow that silly-assed business) spawned the Hardys, Hurricane Helms, Shannon Moore, Joey Mercury, Joey Abs, and a few other ridiculous caricatures of masculinity that you can see on RAW every monday night. Having seen that the inside of that business was a really ugly place, and being highly pain-averse, I decided not to try and follow them to fame and fortune.
I've got some MP3's of The Actors, but they're really nowhere near the level of cool that Kalamazoo was pumping out, and probably not worth posting in the context of the MI scene.
My personal sites at www.lowgenius.net and has a few things on it now (in the middle of redesign); my business site is at lowgenius.com and is almost completely offline at the moment because I'm building a content management system for my clients to use so they don't have to e-mail me to find out how their projects are progressing. (In the middle of being an animal, I've also been a computer geek going back to the days of the TRS-80; I started getting back into database and eventually web development around 1995.) I've got no photos up and really nothing musical related, but will eventually, and would like to eventually get back to kalamazoo and plug back in to everything...maybe a decade and a half of growing up has tempered my ego and allowed enough water to pass under the bridge that I could help some folks somehow, or something, but who knows. Just taking it day by day right now, doing the best I can.
That's my little story, "who I am." Eventually I'll get some pictures up or something, but all my audio tape and pics and video from the good old bad old days is long-lost. I pretty well cut ties with everyone when I moved...the last show I saw in Michigan was the way-packed jesus lizard gig in 95 and I haven't set foot in Kalamazoo or talked to anyone from there other than via these boards and my high school reunion site since 2000. Karen moved to Detroit; my daughter's mom got married; you know what happened to Dustin, Matt, Dan, Karla, et. al.
Thanks for a great site that brings back some great memories.

It's true, the attendance was pretty low, but the crowd that made it was enthusiastic, and M.O.B. did not disappoint! Their performance was no phone-in... lots of tunes from the new LP, sprinkled with chestnuts like "That's When I Reach For My Revolver". Upsilon Acrux (from L.A.) also turned in a fine, proggy set. From my vantage point on stage with the Sinatras, Ron and Scott were awesome as usual. Sorry you missed it!

How do you post a link in a post? I'm a troglodyte.
Posted by: amy on 11-05-07 about All
For those who are concerned about the lack of Sinatras links, they do actually have a myspace page. Also, Nate (Sleestacks, Twister, F& M, etc.) and I are busily working on beefing and revamping the leppotone site to include more history, sound, and possibly videos. So if you're sitting on any live footage, holler! This info will also be linked in the New Real people website (currently under construction). I'll holler when things are up and running.....NEW REAL PEOPLE (Scott and karl from the Sinatras, and the aforementioned Nate) can be found, for the moment, on emusic and itunes.
For anyone who remembers Justin F*rrar, he wrote a review for the Cleveland Scene!
Granted, it's a little hyperbolic, but still...

Reading through the posts I see some of the places I frequented back from 89-93 have gone by the wayside. Too bad, I had such good times going to the clubs to see all the local bands. It was a great time and a great music scene I guess I was lucky to be going to WMU during that time. I have Rollingheads' Daddyhorse CD Scanned for those that must have artwork for their iTunes Lib.

Cool Joby. I seem to remember your name and think we may have played a show or two together at some point in time?
What you're doing here is great. Seriously. A friend of mine told me about it and I just had to try and add my two cents (ha).
I was in the band Lint which became North American Music (this was from 1995-2001-ish) and then I was in Nobody's Favorite for 5 years (we toured a large majority of the continental US and played shows with many punk luminaries). I'll try to send some stuff over at some point, although I have been incredibly busy of late.
I will have to write more later. I just wanted to respond quickly and again say that I dig what you guys are doing here. Thanks!

I personally know there are a lot of bands not represented on here. In time most will be. Some won't. We've just been adding the stuff we own between two of us that run the site (we have a pretty extensive Kzoo collection which is now mostly posted) and then whatever get's sent in. It was pretty funny to see this website. In a way it is very cool to see something like this, that not only archives bands, but also some of their music.
It's pretty Thought Industry and Twitch-centric! Damn! No, it's cool. Hell, I've played in, written about and booked many shows over the last dozen-plus years in Kalamazoo and I don't even see any of my bands on here! Maybe I'm a tad miffed. But not really, because this is a really cool idea.
I see stuff about Joel Wick. He is alive and well and playing music again - with me actually. If you want to check it out, we're called MESA:
http://www.myspace.com/mesakzoo
We just finished up an EP with Jim Diamond at Ghetto Recorders in Detroit (for which you can hear one song on the link provided) and we also did some stuff with our old friend Mike Roche at Broadside.
Speaking of Mr. Roche, his recording of Kalamazoo and surrounding area bands has left an immeasurable impact on this scene. His studio really brought upon a very productive era in this town where most bands were able to afford a great sounding recording...and he still does a great job of it (nice to see his site linked up here).
I had a small hand in bringing rock 'n' roll into the Kraftbrau Brewery (along with Matt Dorbin) after the Space closed. At that time, the Club Soda had not been a decent venue to play for some years, and the closing of the wonderful Space was potentially rough. I used to write and edit Music Revue Magazine (I know, not much to brag about!), so I knew people at Kraftbrau. Dorbin was already doing some great punk shows there, and Steve Berthel, who at the time was one of Kraftbrau's owners, was really interested in helping the people of the Space. Thus, I met with the owners of the Space one night, and we put a slew of previously booked shows from the Space into the Kraftbrau. It went over well, and together we helped usher in more rock music. It's sad to see that it will be going under. But something else will come up in time - it always does.
The point is that many of us here seem to care about Kalamazoo in one way or another. I still think it's a great town to play music in. It's definitely in a lull, but there are many great young bands out there. Look out for: X-Offender, Metal Teeth, Swedish Headaches, the Menthols, Throbbin' Urges, Super Womp, the Clams, Deep Sea Creatures, Wishek and many more I'm sure I have forgotten.
It's great to see old farts (I say that lovingly guys!) like the Sinatras and also oldies but goodies like the Hornet dudes still playing and sounding as good as ever. In fact, I could argue that the Sinatras are probably the most influential band out of all the others in my eyes and ears. I would also like to say that I think Owsla was the best band Bryers was ever in (watch that one raise some eyebrows!)
It's great to see this website and also great to see some people on here that I rarely see these days. Always remember to stay loose and keep it wild.
Sincerely,
Chad Houts

Great site--this was a lot of fun to look through!
Some missing: Tom Deater recorded a few acts including Bone China and started a record label with our band mates, Brent Gutzheit and Mike Hartman: the defunct Gentle Giant Records. We played with alternating line-ups, including myself, Todd Carter, Mike Schuur and Kirk from Snorkel. Sometimes we were Liminal, sometimes Pencilneck. Todd, Brent, and Mike still play as TV Pow in Chicago. I can send more info and links if anyone is interested.
Cheers!

Last spring, the Leppotone gang came up with a list of venues (K'zoo only) that acts "on the scene" in the last 20+ years or so would have played (in no particular order): Club Soda; Harvey's; Kraftbrau; Corner Bar; Missia's; Whistle Stop; K Club; WMU Union; Wood Hall; Grandma's Kitchen; Couch House; Hippy Hole; Dagobah Square; The Space; 666 building; Louie's; World Tree Peace Center; Arcadia Festival site; State Theater; Bell's; Up and Under/Boomerang's; Flipside; Repeat the Beat; B-Side; Wayside; Mountain Jack's; Pepper's; Red Cap rental hall (I know, not technically K'zoo); Wonderful's; Rocket Star; Rick's American Café; Sgt. Pepperoni’s; Comet Café; Hole in the Wall (aka K-zoo Skate Zoo); Papa Pete's; Dirty's; Holiday Lanes; The Lamplighter/Scallywags; Stinger’s (if that was the name of some bar over by Wings Stadium - hey, did anyone here play Wings?); & Chaps. That's not counting parties (I'm fudging a bit with Couch House) and outdoor events such as K College’s Quadstock, Barking Tuna Fest, Slammin’ Salmon Fest, and Sardonic Convergence... not to mention WIDR’s Friday Freebies. I'm sure we forgot some places (among them, maybe some high schools or KVCC even?).
A list of BC area venues would be a riot!
I think pages devoted to venues is a swell idea - I remember venues better than bands sometimes (most times), which is why I like this site - all these remembrances jog what's left of my memory of some of those days. Thanks and cheers!

i was on a bike, escaping a ghost, and i went past some kids in a park and one followed me into a dark tunnel, she had a flashlight, and i had one on my bike, mine wasn't working right, i remembered walking through this tunnel before, when we got to the other end there was an indian girl going the other way, and i remembered her too, and i turned around and walked back through the tunnel because i wanted to know where she was going and remember who she was better. the other person followed me. when we caught up to the indian girl she was lying on the ground, doing yoga. she said she had been waiting for someone to bring her spaghetti for an hour. then she looked like she was dead. the ghost that was after me was trying to protect surviving offspring, whom i had informed that i was in generation of new destructive energy that i needed something specific to do with. perhaps the indian girl provided closure to my mind by playing dead, or perhaps by actually dying. i remember her name now. my father's oldest daughter and i had a daughter who, in the dream, was around the age of two and spoke only in song...

hey ya'll - just wanted to let everyone know that if you weren't at the sinatras show on saturday at kraftbrau, you missed more nostalgia than you can fit in a 55 gallon drum.
hilights: spending the evening drinking beer with bob klomparins. talking with brad frank about old crap while watching the freight train go by. at least half of violent apathy in attendance. greg yesh (no really) of widr fame, circa 1987? looks exactly the same. paul toth, taking it all in. and best of all, the sinatras played exactly how i remembered them and played almost all the songs that i wanted to hear. a dude named lance that remembered that i had hair once, and had not seen me since faq days.
Kraftbrau Brewery welcomes The Sinatras as they risk life, limb and marital harmony to rock your socks off in celebration of their 22nd anniversary! Reunited modsters The Vantrells will kick off the night, and our punk-rock superfriends Whores Of Babylon will meat the middle of this Rock n Roll Dagwood.

This is a very cool website.
Nice to read about all these great bands from a time before MySpace and artificially hyped drudge from the latest cookie-cutter acts. There are still great bands and solo acts out there now, but most of the cool clubs have closed.
Back then bands of all genres co-mingled at all-ages and club gigs. There was an energy about the scene that wasn't just hype, there was something real to experience with that music, and it forever bonded a generation of west Michigan bands.
Keep rockin!

Joel Wick plays bass of course, and sings. It's a 3-piece band and no non-sense. And Joel Wick wasn't wearing his black-rimmed glasses and he had longer hair (not real long, but compared to the buzz job he always had). Anybody know any more about Mesa and whether they have any recordings available?

Is there some live footage of the Purple Dave Experience floating around? I think John Fisher has a video of the whole show at Harvey's from 1997. The line up was Purple Dave/Lead Guitar - Jim Cherry/Lead Vocals & Guitar - Anthony Gentile/Bass Guitar - Paul Wartella/ Drums. Dave was dressed in a suit and all the boys were wearing dresses and girls nightyz with make up. Pretty hot stuff. That would be a crack up to see!!!

hey Jeff, I'll check with Matt Mullins and see if he has any old Tom Collins stuff around. Also, does anyone have any old Dan Roe era Desacrator tracks they could get up? That would take me WAAAAAY back!

Fixed the problem with the Doxie Tracks. Should work fine now.

Rollinghead was my FAVORITE band back then, although I was equally enthusiastic about Doxie, Twitch, and King Tammy. Being underage I missed a lot of shows, but I made it to every all ages show, and still have some bootlegs that I made of them lying around. I was a regular at Flipside, Boogie Records and especially Music Express. I will be digging through my collection to see what I have to contribute. You guys need to add an image gallery, with a Kalamazoo Band Tattoo section.
This is simply the most important site on the internet.

Note to everyone, especially Toby - we do hope to get new bands up here as well. that's exactly the intention - connect to the old and introduce the new. It's got to be part of the family tree somehow.
It's hard to say who's connected. We're trying to be inclusive and relevant simultaneously. Some bands certainly hit the edge. Johhny with an Eye (my band played with them twice) always seemed to distance themselves from the shorts n' boots crew and the leppotone joint. Johnnie/Eye's 'influence' was really retro-active after Verve Pipe broke. What about Mom Handy or Jah Kings hmmmmm, or what about Water 4 the Pool?. Someone wrote about 'groovespoon' and while the name sounds familiar and I'm sure they did quite a take at RICK's American Cafe, I'm not sure they go here. Maybe Joe Moon?
The family tree, BTW, starts and ends with THE SINATRAs. In my mind they are not merely the grandfathers here, but Pangea itself. --- end of previous message ---
Thanks for the quick reply. For the record I spent 2 or three hours on the site last night playing mp3s for bands I hadn't heard in ages and enjoyed the site immensely.

First off. This site fucking rocks. It's great to look back at the bands I saw when I started going to the clubs and it always seemed like somebody cool was playing every single time I felt like going out.
One band I can't believe isn't on here is Johnny With an Eye or the VanderArk Bros. as even though I was never much of a Verve Pipe fan they made an impact here in that time period and went on to some national attention and should be included on the list of bands.
Also, it would be incredible if besides being a site for a record of past bands if perhaps there would be room for an area where current bands could post mp3's or promote.
I won't lie to you. The Kalamazoo band scene isn't what it was in the 90's but there are STILL a lot of talented bands out there. This is a great start but this site has a lot of potential to not only celebrate the past but to also bridge a gap into the present and future. This is suggesion and not criticism. I love this site and will check in often to see what little tidbits of goodness you can bring me.
P.S. Knee Deep Shag should definitely be on here somewhere and The Jonze were a fun live band that had a good following in the 2000 to 2004-5 area.

Howdy fellers! Its good to see lots of familiar names and bands from the good old days. Ive poured lots of booze down most of your necks and I remember those days fondly! Great to see this site, and I appreciate the music downloads of bands that I still enjoy listening to.

Feel free to add the First to the Fence songs. There is a myspace page to link to as well. myspace.com/firsttothefence
I can think of several bands missing from the page (Berwer, Trocar, Monoglot), but am leaving for England real soon. When I return in mid-may I'll dig around and find some stuff.
I also have a radio show on fridays from 5-6pm on WIDR called the 7 Degrees of Kalamazoo... this site will be a huge help for me. I have lots of local CDs, flyers, and live recordings and would love to help out with this soon. mark@hornetmusic.org
